Pushing the Boundaries of Miniaturization with Laser Micro Machining
Everything is getting smaller to make things better. Engineers are constantly striving to shrink components without sacrificing performance or reliability. This drive toward miniaturization is especially critical in sectors such as medical devices, aerospace, and advanced electronics, where smaller, more precise parts unlock entirely new possibilities for innovation.
The Challenge: Overcoming Limits in Miniature Component Design
Many engineers face roadblocks when attempting to reduce part size. Traditional machining methods can cause constraints in wall thickness, material stability, and precision tolerances — ultimately limiting how far designs can be pushed. These limitations often prevent manufacturers from achieving the next level of miniaturization in their products.
Nanotech’s Solution: Advancing Laser Micro Machining
We invested in a new laser machining system specifically designed to address these challenges. To demonstrate its capabilities, our team created the “Multiplex,” a showcase component built in two forms:
- Net-size Multiplex: 16.5 gage (.0620 OD, .0520 ID) hypodermic tube, 316 stainless steel.
- Quarter-size Multiplex: 26 gage (.0180 OD, .0120 ID) hypodermic tube, 316 stainless steel.
The Multiplex illustrates the unmatched precision and control possible with our laser system, highlighting fine features, intricate geometries, and flawless repeatability — all at scales where traditional machining reaches its limits.
Results & Impact: Proof in Precision
By successfully producing the Multiplex at both standard and quarter scale, we proved the effectiveness of our laser system in delivering micron-level accuracy. This breakthrough enables engineers to confidently explore new frontiers of product design, knowing that manufacturability will no longer be a barrier. The result: smaller, lighter, and more reliable components that push innovation forward.
